Halloween Night - Child Life, October 1973

Thanks for all your visits and support for Face Paint Heaven. I’m delighted that again this year lots of you are visiting to discover some fun and easy face painting ideas for Halloween 2011.

Sadly I had a lot of my content stolen, so if it doesn’t say Face Paint Heaven in the banner of the page, this is being used without permission. Hopefully you are reading this on the site I created for people just like you, though.

I wanted to check in with you all with some awesome face paint designs for this Halloween. This post is for the kids and those of you who will be face painting children for parties and trick-or-treating, though there is plenty to inspire teens and adults too. I’ll be back with a round-up of adult spooky makeup designs in my next post.

My top 5 Halloween face paint ideas for kids are as follows:

  1. Witch — The classic Halloween face paint that never goes out of style.
  2. Cat — Who wants to be a Halloween kitty? I think I see a few paws there…
  3. Dog — Face painting for puppy and pooch fans, dog makeup is cute and just a bit different.
  4. Lion — Rawr! Lion makeup is adorable for your little cubs, and can be as cute or fearsome as they want.
  5. Vampire — Dracula or Twilight, vampire makeup is always a Halloween hit.

Paint a Lucky Shamrock on Your Face for St Patricks!

St Patrick's Day face paint design

St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner so how about today we discover how to create a lucky shamrock face paint design in honor of St Patrick and this Irish holiday?

There are various ideas for St Patrick’s Day face painting out there but the shamrock is one of everyone’s favorite designs.

Another thing the St Patrick’s themed makeup and face paint ideas have in common is the color green! In fact you can create a cute Irish St Paddy’s inspired face painting using only greens and white.

So today I’ll show you how easy it is to paint a shamrock on your face or on someone else’s. If you want to go for a full face paint look, I’ve added just one idea here and there is a fantastic St Patrick’s Day mask style face painting design in the video I’ve linked to below.

Christmas Face Painting: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Face Painting

Are you looking forward to Christmas? I know I am! Now is the time to start planning your Christmas face painting for plays, parties, or just for fun!

And what could be a more fun face painting for kids in particular than this cute Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer face paint? After all, Rudolph is everyone’s favorite reindeer. If you want to be one of the other reindeer you can simply change that red nose to a black one.

There are several versions of Rudolph available online and I’m not sure who first came up with this adorable face painting but have linked to one of my favorite examples in the video further below.

It is a fairly easy face painting to do and only needs 4 colors of face paint. If you don’t have the red sparkle face paint you might also want to add some face glitter to your Rudolph face paint supplies.

Fall Face Painting — A Gorgeous Leaf Design

Fall Fairy Face Paint Instructions

Whether you call it Autumn or Fall, this is the season of falling leaves and rich colors. So what better Fall face painting theme than this gorgeous leaf design from Heather Timmons of ‘The Cats Meow Face Painting’, originally inspired by a design in a face painting book from the Wolfe brothers*. You can see this make up in different colors and variations in Heather’s video (below).

I think this leafy design would be perfect not just for Thanksgiving and for Fall themed events but also for a woodland fairy face painting. Don’t you think sprites, wood nymphs and elves alike would look magical in leafy make up like this?

But maybe what I like best about Heather’s ‘Leafy Eye Glam’ design is that this is face painting for grown up girls. Teen girls and women can wear this make up without danger of looking childish or clown-like. It is both striking and delicate, and with the jewel tones of the paint and the addition of the metallic gold face paint it can give you an exotic Eastern Princess look.

Corpse Bride Face Painting Tutorial

Corpse Bride Make Up instructions

Here’s a cute Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride makeup look just in time for Halloween! This face painting example is quite involved but the results are worth it.

The Corpse Bride is a lovely Halloween costume and makeup idea for women and teens as well as for younger girls. She is just the right combination of prettiness and creepiness for those of us who want to look cute but still enter into the spirit of a horrible Halloween.

My face painting example below is mostly a combination of a couple of Corpse Bride makeup tutorial videos. I’ll share those further down. Some of the Corpse Bride face paint tutorials put a lot of effort into creating authentic cheek detail to match the Tim Burton Corpse Bride. That is fine if you have a steady hand and plenty of time to spare, and you can see an example in the first makeup video. But for newer face painters and those of you creating this on a not-too-patient friend or child, I recommend keeping it simple. In my face painting instructions I’ve used a similar detail to the one from the child Corpse Bride video instead.

How to Paint a Puppy Dog Face

How to do a Puppy Dog Face Painting

Isn’t this puppy dog face paint adorable? We’ve had the cat face paint so now it is time to make the dog lovers happy too!

This is a great example of a face painting that doesn’t cover the whole face. Your own skin color can provide contrast with the white and black areas of this design. The only tricky part of this dog face paint design is the fine brush work. But you can add as much or little detail as you like to your puppy dog face.

Kids will of course love to be a puppy or dog but you can have a lot of fun with this look if you are older too. Couples can even go to costume parties as a cat and a dog… but no fighting, please!

This clever face painting design is from makeup artist Lyn and you can see her video below. Her finished dog look is fantastic! It just shows what you can do with only 3 colors of face paint.

How to do Cute Ghost Makeup for Girls and Women

Cute ghost makeup tutorial

So, you want to be a cute Halloween ghost? Well, this ghost makeup tutorial will help you to be the hottest ghost in town!

Just like with our cute Zombie girl makeup, there is no reason why a ghost can’t be cute. Kids look adorable with white faces but it isn’t exactly the most imaginative of Halloween face painting designs. After all, older kids and adults don’t want their friends to say, “Well, you didn’t try very hard”.

With this ghost face paint, that is not going to happen. This is the perfect ghost make up for teen girls and for women, which gives you a spooky but sophisticated look. Yes, not only will you look like a ghost, but you will look gorgeous at the same time. Problem solved!

If anyone looking for a ghost face painting for guys is reading, stay with me. Take a look at the below step by step ghost makeup tutorial (tip: if talking to your son, call it “ghost face paint” and not “makeup”!) and you will see that if you stop short of adding lipstick, mascara and eyebrow pencil you will have a ghost design that is great for guys. As with all these Halloween face painting tutorials, the key is to adapt the example to suit yourself.

Avatar Face Painting is the Coolest Blue Face Paint Design for 2010

Neytiri Avatar Makeup Face Painting

No matter whether you are face painting for boys or girls, this makeup inspired by the movie Avatar is going to be popular! Girls and women will love to be the beautiful and brave heroine Neytiri but boys can be one of the young male Na’vi warriors.

The Avatar makeup here is that of Neytiri but can be adapted for boys.

An Avatar face painting is mostly blue paint or makeup. You will need a pale blue and a darker blue, and also a pink and some white for details.

Not all face painting designs work well on a digital example. If the images here don’t look like the Avatar makeup effect you want to achieve, I do recommend watching the wonderful video from FancifulFaces where you can see both how she painted the Neytiri face paint on herself and the effectiveness of her finished result.

Day of the Dead Face Painting: Sugar Skull (Simple)

Dia De Los Muertos Sugar Skull Face Paint

Do you celebrate Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) as well as Halloween? Or maybe instead of? Are you looking for a face painting idea to celebrate the occasion?

The Sugar Skull is a fun part of Day of the Dead and makes for an awesome face painting design. There are some complex and beautiful designs out there but, to get started, here is a simple (but cute) Day of the Dead face paint example. For an advanced Sugar Skull face art makeup tutorial, see my next blog post.

This Sugar Skull face painting can be achieved with just 3 colors of paint: white, black, and your choice of a brighter color for the flower petal effect around the eye sockets. In this face painting example I have used pink as it creates a nice contrast with the black and white.

Be King of the Jungle with Lion Face Paint

lion face paint example

Lion face paint is fun for all ages and is a jungle cat face painting design that will come in handy not just for Halloween costumes but also for stage productions of The Wizard of Oz or The Lion King.

Whether you need to paint a Simba or Nala, a Cowardly Lion, or just have a kid who is big cat crazy (and you don’t want to paint those tiger stripes), this lion face paint is the perfect basis for the king of animals.

You can use this example to create either a male lion or a lioness, or a little lion cub. To suggest a full grown male lion you will need to add a wig, hood or hairpiece to suggest a mane (unless you have big hair!).

This example is fine just as it is for a lioness or lion cub. You could always add a pair of cute cub ears on a hairband.
