Whether you call it Autumn or Fall, this is the season of falling leaves and rich colors. So what better Fall face painting theme than this gorgeous leaf design from Heather Timmons of ‘The Cats Meow Face Painting’, originally inspired by a design in a face painting book from the Wolfe brothers*. You can see this make up in different colors and variations in Heather’s video (below).
I think this leafy design would be perfect not just for Thanksgiving and for Fall themed events but also for a woodland fairy face painting. Don’t you think sprites, wood nymphs and elves alike would look magical in leafy make up like this?
But maybe what I like best about Heather’s ‘Leafy Eye Glam’ design is that this is face painting for grown up girls. Teen girls and women can wear this make up without danger of looking childish or clown-like. It is both striking and delicate, and with the jewel tones of the paint and the addition of the metallic gold face paint it can give you an exotic Eastern Princess look.
Here I have used bronzes and rich deep reds to celebrate the Autumn season. Only one side is shown here, you can keep it a one-sided design or follow Heather’s example and create a smaller version of the design beside the other eye. This gives it balance without being overwhelming.

Autumn Fairy Face Painting Instructions Steps 1 – 3
Step 1: To begin, sponge on your bronze or orange face paint using a high density face painting sponge. Add your gold face paint, also with the sponge. You are aiming for a dappled effect rather than uniform blocks of color. Blend at the edges to keep it soft. The area below the eyebrow looks nice with more intense color and extra gold shimmer. You can add your lip color now or wait until the end. A bronze or dark terracotta color works well with this autumnal make up but avoid going too orange.
Step 2: Begin painting on the leaf design using black face paint on a face painting brush. I find this step a little tricky so I have broken it down into 2 steps here.
Step 3: Add the lower half of the leaf design with your black face paint and brush. Heather’s leaf designs in the video all vary, with some simpler than others. Your (or your model’s) hairline and face shape may also influence how you create the design. With this model there was not enough room to add another leaf above the eye.

Autumn Fairy Face Painting Instructions Steps 4 – 6
Step 4: Now for the fun part. With your deep red rust brown face paint and brush, fill in the tips of those leaves. You will get a nice two-tone effect if you don’t fill in the whole leaf, but you can if you want to.
Step 5: Going back to your black face paint and brush, Add 3 long teardrop shapes to each of the 3 large leaves. Dot on a line of black dots beneath the lower eyelid and alongside the curved lines.
Step 6: This Fall face painting comes to life with the addition of gold glitter gel. Outline the leaves, fill in the scrolled ends of the curved lines, and dot on to each of the black teardrops. If you like, add a little gold lip gloss or dab some glitter onto your lips. Now your make up looks magical!
